Deciding is a Skill

One of the most critical initial steps in transformational change is DECISION.
Deciding is a skill that we aren't usually taught. And we should be, because some decision-making styles are much less effective than others!

Do you see yourself in any of these decision-making styles?

  1. The Waffler
Waffles back and forth between choices. Commits to one, then changes mind and commits to other, doesn’t move forward with either option.

  2. The Reckless Impulsive
Uncomfortable with indecision, makes a hasty choice in order to ease their discomfort

  3. The Undecided-Decider
Afraid to choose, remains indefinitely ambivalent, thus making a choice.

  4. The Resolute
Deliberates and considers options, makes a firm decision and acts on it.

If you are anything like I was, you may hang out for far too long in the undecided camp. The psychological word for indecision is ambivalence. And let me tell you, being in a state of ambivalence is very uncomfortable, to say the least. Actually, it’s quite torturous. It’s like being a human rope in a tug-of-war. Being undecided usually involves a repeating cycle of contemplating pros/cons, hoping for certainty, clarity, the answer, and, well, staying stuck.

Which type of decision-maker are you? Is it working for you?

Don’t waffle. Don’t jump the gun. Don’t let indecision make your decision for you. Let’s all aspire to be more like The Resolute. Choose with conviction!

There is freedom in deciding.
